Hey There, Welcome back! If you enjoy this post, be sure you subscribe to my newsletter to get all my blog posts delivered straight to your inbox.
This past weekend, my family and I went away for the holiday. For the past 6 years, we have traveled to watch the NCAA Men’s College Lacrosse Playoffs/Championship, and this year it was being hosted in Baltimore, Maryland. My husband was a big time player in college and my son and daughter both play hoping to get scholarships when the time comes.
What a great environment to have your kids around…
…the Division 1 schools in this years tournament were Duke, Notre Dame, Cornell, and Virgina…all Ivy League schools.
The kids are able to mingle with the players in the hotel, and let me tell you, what a great bunch to mingle with…
…they are smart, educated, polite, athletic, and each has a drive to succeed and win! What great role models!
My son wants to attend Cornell and my daughter has set her sites on Duke. I don’t know if they will be accepted…
…but they are setting their goals high, really high. They will never know until they try, and this is what started me thinking about what business and sports both have in common.
If you want to succeed, you must set you goals high, and continue to strive for them. You will never know your full potential until you try, and once you do, you will quickly learn that the sky is the limit to what you can accomplish with the right mindset.
Remember…
…onlyYOU limit yourself to your potential…
…so let the sky be the limit.
You just have to erase your fear…
…of failing, of not accomplishing your goals.
If any of those college kids let their fears control them…they would have never made it into the colleges they were attending OR…
…we wouldn’t have been watching each of them fight in that game for the championship!
Now, let me tell you a little about the last game, which was for the Championship, and what it has to do with business.
You see, it wound up being Duke against Notre Dame. They were equally matched! It wasn’t a high scoring game, and it was neck and neck with each point the whole game. At the end of the game…
…it was 5-5…a tie! So they went into a 4 minute overtime. In overtime, the first team that scores a goal…
…wins.
I can only imagine how fired up both teams were.
So now, two players, one from each team, stand at the midfield line for the face-off, to fight for the ball. The whistle blows, the ball goes into the air, one of the players from Duke grabs the ball…
…and starts running toward the opposing teams cage, like a train. There was no stopping him! In 5 seconds, he shot, he scored, he won the game for his team!
Now, let me ask you a question…
…if he hesitated, if he had a mindset of not making it to the goal, or maybe if he was afraid of failing in front of his teammates…
…do you think he could have done what he did? Of course not!
And the same applies to business…set you mind on the winning goal. Don’t let anything get in your way. If it does, climb over it, climb around it, what ever it takes! It will make you stronger.
You also need to surround yourself with people that are in the same mindset. You know the saying…
…birds of a feather, flock together. Well, soar with Eagles. Hang and learn with the people who think the same as you. Or better yet…
,…learn from those that dream bigger and stretch themselves farther and farther, for in time, you will learn to do the same.
Keep striving to be the best you can be, because you never know when it will be your time to shine and score that winning goal!

Hi Sharon,
Great article, very inspiring!
Your kids were at the best place with the right people, There are some studies about “Epigenetics”, that show how cells react different in different environments, so if the environment is “reach” they will be stimulated to do their best.
I love a quote that says ““Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
So keep the bar high

Hi Sharon,
As a huge sports fan, I love your post! Athletes spend thousands of hours preparing for their games. Imagine if entrepreneurs spend some of their time in “preparation”. You gotta show up daily to succeed

It all comes down to “teamwork” when we want to be successful in our business. It is in the giving that we receive. So that’s what we are all here for. Sharing and caring for one another. We are like a sports team because if one of us falls behind, the others pump us up.
Great post Sharon.

Hola Sharon!
Very interesting story! Sports have a lot of common with business!
Actually some athletes are successful entrepreneurs due to the culture of perseverance and the winning mindset they learned when they were part of a sports team.
