Let the Cat ‘In’ The Bag…Slowly???

So today…

I was at the pet store buying necessaties for my 4 legged friends, and I picked up a bag of treats for my cat.  I love to suprise her because she always goes crazy when I offer them to her.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, ‘Let The Cat ‘Out’ Of The Bag’ , well, here’s the flip…I offered my cat a treat and let her smell it, taste it and whatever else she needs to do to figure out if she likes what I’m giving her.  So I see her enjoying it, I offer her another and walk away.  Then, a few seconds later,  I hear her trying to get into the treat bag.  I take the bag, and while I’m opening it, her eyes widen as big as dimes and she’s trying to climb up my leg to get at the treats…

Now your’re probably thinking….what the heck does this have to do with marketing or personal development??  It has everything to do with it…let me explain…

When you have a prospect opt into your list or maybe, make a connection with you on a social media site…don’t dump the whole bag of treats on them.  Let them get into your bag of treats, your pieces of information, one at a time.  Let them taste it, smell it, digest it and if they like it, they will come back for a second, third…and thus the relationship and trust begins.

Those first few encounters are so crutial, they need to be handled very gently.  You need to nuture them so the relationship continues to grow and it keeps them comming back for more.

Building trust on the internet, or in any relationship for that matter, is key.  As you build trust, people  become very loyal,  especially when you are offering ‘real’ value to their lives.  I know this is true, because I’m speaking from my own experiences.  I have complete trust in my mentors because the value and information they have shared with me…

….is priceless!

I hope you are ‘getting’ the message that I am trying to get across to you here today…that it is SO important to offer real value, all the time, slowly.

When you change your thinking from what you can get, to what you can give…

…watch what begins to happen to ‘you’ and ‘your business’.

Be Well,

Sharon Hartman

P.S.  Meet Shadow…my inspiration for this post.

Great thought about how we need to be open with people at all times, not try to trick them with a false front. Enjoyed the read!,

Good tip, Sharon. First contact, you MUST put your best foot forward. I know we all try to give our best content and efforts on blog posts because that’s where we’ll make many first connections. But first contacts are often in places we might think to be of less value… a tweet, a Twitter direct message, a FB comment, a YouTube video or comment.
So you’re right, we MUST Over-Deliver… and at ALL times, even when we think it’s fairly insignificant and we’re trying to rush through all our contacts. But we really have to slow it down to create REAL connections and relationships. Love the story… but allergic to cats! (some of ‘em anyway).:)

Its all about the connections and relationships we build. Most people don’t get that key point
and its so crutial when building their business.

Sorry to hear your allergic to cats…Its funny, people that have told me they are allergic to cats don’t seem to
have a problem with mine. They’re pretty amazing animals (at least mine is!)

    Hi Sharon –

Hey that’s a fun story :) And you’re right … hadn’t thought of marketing in terms of ‘cat’ before … makes me wonder if cat people are likely to be better prepared to be listeners and relationship builders.

    Grins.

    Hey Andrea,
Glad you enjoyed my post! There are so many experiences in our day to day life that we can blog about. We just have to look for the message. :) I learned this from master blogger Yaro Starak, when Katie Freiling was interviewing him.

I was wondering where you were going with that cat story. But it makes sense and you did a good job with the analogy. Hey, I like cats too.
