The Vicious Cycle of Fear and Procrastination

Spirituality

Are you caught up in this vicious cycle??  It goes something like this…

…You have a new lead for your business, and its time to pick up the phone to make ‘the call’.  You’re looking at the phone…breaking into a sweat, trying to pick it up, but it weighs about a thousand pounds.  You can’t understand why it looks SO HEAVY when just before, you called a friend, it was as light as a feather!

Watch out!  You’re beginning to get sucked in…

…You start to procrastinate, the phone just keeps getting heavier and heavier and before long, you have an urgent need to put in a load of laundry, or your sock draw suddenly needs re-arranging along with a hundred other senseless things you find to do just to avoid making that call.  Now in your mind, you have created this overwhelming fear of what will happen if you call.

Sound a little familiar?  If its not a phone call, I’m sure you can relate it to many other similar situations you have had.

You proscratinate because of a fear!

That fear somehow manifests itself and you continue  to  procrastinate until the sheer thought of doing whatever it was you started out to do, becomes crippling.  You are caught in the vicious cycle of fear and proscratination.  This cycle can become all too consuming if you let it grab hold and control you.

You’re not alone, we’ve all been there at one time or another.  Maybe some of you are still stuck and can’t break free.

But there is a way out…

You need to ask yourself  ’what am I really afraid of?’  Procrastination is basically avoidance…of feeling an uncomfortable emotion. What are you avoiding? Name it. Acknowledge it. Say out loud “I want to avoid ….” Once you face it, name it and acknowledge it, your fear reduces significantly and you have a much better chance to take action.

If that prospect tells you ‘NO’ to joining your business, or worse…

…tells you explicitly, what you can do with your business, and hangs up the phone on you!   What exactly do you think will happen to you?  Will you drop dead on the spot?  Will your business fall apart?  Of course not!  Maybe your ego will get a little brused, but thats about it!  You will be no worse off than before you asked. You didn’t have the prospect before and you don’t have the prospect after.  No different, period!  If you didn’t ask, how would you ever know?  Look at it as their loss.  Do you really want someone like that partnering with you in your business anyway?

Another way to look at a task you might be procrastinating about is to ask yourself, ‘is it really worth doing?’ If not, don’t waste another minute on it!  Get it off your to-do list and out of your head.

If it IS important…STOP PROCRASTINATING and tackle it RIGHT NOW!

The next time you are faced with a challenge, don’t procrastinate because of a fear.  Muster up the courage and tackle that fear!  Grab hold of the ’fear’ and tear it apart before it grabs and tears you apart!

Leave me a comment below and share your biggest fear that causes you to procrastinate.  Acknowledgement it is the first step in reducing that fear!

    Hi Sharon,
great article about an experience nearly everybody is familiar with. The human is very creative when it comes to excuse: I can’t call now, it’s too early. Or it’s too late. Oh, I might disturb him now, bla, bla. The list is endless. There’s only one way out: Just do it.
    Take care

Yes people procrastinate way too much, and take action way too little. Like you said…they should ‘just do it’.

Thanks for posting this article. I’m decidedly frustrated with struggling to search out pertinent and intelligent commentary on this issue. Everybody today goes to the very far extremes to either drive home their viewpoint that either: everyone else in the planet is wrong, or two that everyone but them does not really understand the situation. Many thanks for your concise, pertinent insight.

    Sharon,
I really love this post and can feel what you are saying on a personal basis since I have also struggled in the past with fear and procrastination.

When I was building my previous opportunity several years ago I had chosen to use cold calling ( I do not recommend this…at all) as a means of connecting with real estate professionals and others in the financial services industry.

I was very nervous initially when I made these calls and tried every trick in the book to get over the horrible feeling in my stomach before getting on the phone.

The only thing that worked for me was taking my fears out of the equation and looking at the situation from an analytical perspective.

I asked myself “What is the worst that could possibly happen?” My answer to this question was that someone could hang up on me or say something really mean to me (which they did).

Then I asked myself “What is the best thing that could happen?” The answer was that I could make a new business partner who would develop into a major earner and incredible asset to my team and a great friend to me on a personal basis.

Then I took stock of my “WHY”. Part of my why has to deal with providing a better life for my family so in keeping this motivation in mind and the other factors just discussed I was able to endure placing myself in an uncomforable position to achieve my goals.

I ended up becoming really good on the phone and cold callin in particular so I am grateful for having developed this skill while proving to myself that I could do whatever I set my mind to.

Just in case you are wondering whether or not you should cold call to build your business I would HIGHLY recommend against it since this is not duplicatable by the majority of your team.

    To Our Massive Success,
    John

How great that you were able to conquer a major fear that alot of marketers experience.

It just goes to show that perserverance prevails!

Thanks so much for sharing. :)

    Sharon,
FEAR= False Expectations Appearing Real. Fear and procrastination should always be questioned.
It sometimes helps to remember another time you felt that way and how you felt when you finished. Remember the fear and then the task completed how it went so much better than you expected. Remember how you got positive results and accomplished something amazing and in less time than you imagined. Retrain your beliefs and recognize that when you feel that way and push through that it leads to growth and self development.
Great post! Got lots of us thinking!

    Hey Christy,

Our minds are so powerful. It can make or break us if allowed. Retraining it is somehthing that alot of people don’t realize they can do.

If we feed into our fears, we will get consumed by them. Push through and tackle them. Its not easy, but the growth that is gained is priceless.

So you got me thinking. I guess I tell myself to not take the next step in my business because I might waste some money trying. Then, I might do it all wrong and look stupid. But that doesn’t make too much sense because nobody would know I did something stupid except me and anyone whom I had confided in about my intentions.

So if I’m only afraid to lose money or look stupid, I think that I’m best off to limit my investment to a comfortable amount of money that I am willing to put on the line for the sake of growing my business… and if I look stupid, so it wouldn’t be the first time.

I really appreciate the article, Sharon, because it really challenges me to stop making excuses and get into action. Believe me, this is advice I will really take to heart. Thanks for your perspective.

    Hey David,

Taking action is the first step in conquering our fears!

Like you said, start small if you’re afraid of loosing money, and build from there. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket right off the bat. And…

Who say’s what’s the right or wrong way to do something anyway…only YOU know what’s right or wrong for YOU!

One will never know untill they try, but if you don’t try, you might kick yourself down the road and say ‘Oh, if I only did…”

As one of my mentors Debbie Turner describes it…there’s an Excuse System going on in their head.

NO more excuses. It’s about taking massive action.

This entire excuse system is really just a rookie mistake. It’s okay to be a rookie and make mistakes but you gotta do what I do…that is I’ve learned to get over the ugly yucky stuff.

Fail forward and “get comfortable with being uncomfortable”..as what my other mentor Mark Hoverson taught me.

We were all victims of procrastination at one time or another but made that choice to take that first step. The one that doesn’t take that first step, doesn’t make that second step. Period.

    Thanks for sharing this Sharon.
